The satellites Envisat and ERS-2 European Space Station ESA revealed the existence of a large source of freshwater in the Arctic Ocean is producing a swelling of the sea surface consists mainly over the past 15 years.
This discovery has revealed that there is a trend accelerated by the winds that would produce this phenomenon, which has been in the minds of researchers with the question What if the wind changes?
It is believed that if the winds change this water to pour cool Atlantic Ocean and Europe since slowed along the Gulf Stream.
Since 2002 to date, the sea rose about 15 cm in the area where fresh water is agglomerating and their volume increased by 8,000 cubic kilometers. This means an increase of 10% across the Arctic Ocean fresh water.
Scientists say there would be major circulation systems of fresh water in the oceans and the bulge of water would be due to an acceleration in the circulation system of one of them, the turn of Beaufort.
The Beaufort Gyre is a big ocean circulation clockwise in the western Arctic Ocean. According to ESA is believed to currently accelerated by the strong winds of the Arctic.
If the winds change direction is the current concern.
Scientists studying satellite images of Envisat and ERS-2 explains that a key ocean current and temperature of the Gulf Stream current that carries a large body of water from the Gulf of Mexico.
The change of the winds slow the Gulf Stream thus causing a drop in temperature in Europe.
The scientists said in their report that they believe that sea ice acts as a barrier between the atmosphere and ocean. So changes in ice cover would change the effect of wind on the ocean.
They explained that they had not previously been linked with the sea winds and the reason is that the ice would affect the winds.
"The next step is to try to confirm this idea further investigate how changes in sea ice cover to the interaction between the atmosphere and the ocean," ESA scientists say.
